Returning to the World Cup stage for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2022, Qatar aims to surpass their previous performance, where they exited after losing all three group stage matches. Having qualified through Asia, the team faces this tournament amid a challenging run, failing to secure a win in their last six fixtures.

Their preparation concluded with a 1-1 draw against El Salvador, following a narrow defeat to the Republic of Ireland. Leading the attack is Akram Afif, who remains the team’s principal offensive threat, supported by captain Hassan Al Haydos and defender Boualem Khoukhi, both bringing considerable international experience to the squad.

Switzerland’s Consistent World Cup Presence

Opposing Qatar, Switzerland enters their sixth consecutive World Cup, having advanced beyond the group stage in each of the last three tournaments. Coached by Murat Yakin, the Swiss team arrives in California following a strong finish to their warm-up matches: a commanding 4-1 victory over Jordan and a 1-1 draw with Australia.

Switzerland’s squad features seasoned internationals such as Granit Xhaka and Manuel Akanji, alongside attacking talents including Breel Embolo, Dan Ndoye, and Ruben Vargas. The Swiss side has demonstrated remarkable consistency, suffering only one defeat in their last 14 matches across all competitions.

While these two teams have never crossed paths in a World Cup match, their history includes a friendly encounter in 2018, where Qatar secured a narrow 1-0 win. After opening matches in the group saw Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina settle for a draw, this upcoming clash on Saturday presents both Qatar and Switzerland a valuable opportunity to take early command of their group.
