The fusion of sports and gaming has taken an innovative leap, as an engineer has repurposed Meta Ray-Ban glasses to create an immersive racing experience that mimics the thrill of Mario Kart. This novel platform allows runners to compete against a virtual version of themselves from a previous run, complete with real-time feedback and interactive rewards.

Stijn Spanhove, a software engineer at the digital studio In The Pocket, developed a web application compatible with the Meta Ray-Ban glasses. By uploading GPX files from earlier activities recorded on Strava, Spanhove integrated gaming elements into outdoor workouts, transforming ordinary runs into dynamic challenges.

Central to the innovation is a virtual “ghost” runner that traces the path of a prior run. Displayed through the glasses, this ghost provides a live reference point, enabling athletes to gauge their current pace against their own past performance and strive to surpass it.

Interactive Gaming Meets Real-World Fitness

Beyond simply racing a previous time, the system incorporates additional video game-inspired mechanics. As runners progress, they can collect virtual coins scattered along the route, enhancing the competitive and motivational aspect. Scores and achievements are tracked in real time, turning a solitary run into an engaging, game-like event.

This inventive approach to gamification moves far beyond traditional fitness apps like Strava, which primarily focus on segment times and leaderboards. Instead, it offers a visually engaging, interactive experience by merging augmented reality technology with personal athletic performance.

By leveraging existing running data and overlaying it with a playful yet competitive interface, Spanhove’s creation redefines how athletes can interact with their own progress. This development hints at a future where training sessions might feel less like routine exercise and more like immersive video games, all while motivating individuals to push their limits.
