The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revoked Senegal’s AFCON 2025 championship title, originally won on the field, and reassigned it to Morocco following a successful challenge by the North African nation. In response, Senegal lodged an appeal against CAF’s ruling.
In a recent update, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) revealed that its arbitrators have decided to issue a detailed ruling rather than a quick summary judgment. According to CAS, this process will extend over several weeks, with the final award expected by the end of November 2026.
The controversy erupted during the AFCON 2025 final between host country Morocco and Senegal. The match took a dramatic turn when Senegal protested a late penalty awarded to Morocco by leaving the field in the final moments of regular time. After a 15-minute interruption, play resumed, and Senegal ultimately secured victory on the pitch.
Dispute Over the Final Result
Despite Senegal’s on-field win, the situation took a legal turn in March when the CAF appeals panel overturned the match outcome. The panel awarded Morocco a default victory, effectively stripping Senegal of the title they had initially claimed in the stadium.
As Senegal awaits the CAS decision, the African football community remains attentive to the developments surrounding this high-profile dispute, which has cast a long shadow over the AFCON 2025 tournament’s conclusion.
