Next week, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) will distribute monthly benefits for September 2026 to a specific group of recipients as part of its established three-Wednesdays payment schedule.

Among the 71.3 million people receiving Social Security benefits nationwide, payments are staggered across three Wednesdays each month according to the beneficiary’s birth date. This system ensures that payments are efficiently managed and delivered in a timely manner.

Schedule for Social Security Payments in September 2026

September’s payment cycle is divided as follows: individuals born between the 1st and 10th of any month receive their benefits on Wednesday, September 9. Those born between the 11th and 20th are scheduled to receive payments on Wednesday, September 16—the third Wednesday of the month. Finally, recipients born between the 21st and 31st will be paid on Wednesday, September 23.

It is important to note that for beneficiaries who receive Social Security based on another person’s work record, the SSA uses the birth date of that individual to determine the payment date.

Aside from the three main Wednesdays, there is an additional payment date earlier in the month. Certain long-term beneficiaries will receive their benefits on Thursday, September 3, marking the start of the Social Security disbursement schedule for the month.
