Lamine Yamal marked his return to the score sheet as Spain secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in their World Cup Group H match held on Sunday in Atlanta. The young forward, just 18 years old, broke the deadlock early, finding the net in the 10th minute to set the tone for a dominant performance by the European champions.
After a disappointing goalless draw against Cape Verde in their opening fixture, Spain was eager to reassert their offensive prowess. The team’s attack, which had failed to deliver in the first game, came alive with Yamal making his first start in two months following a hamstring injury. His timely inclusion helped spark an early offensive surge that overwhelmed the Saudi side.
Yamal’s decisive goal came as he expertly positioned himself at the back post to convert a low cross from Mikel Oyarzabal. The momentum continued to build rapidly, with Oyarzabal himself scoring twice within a three-minute span, pushing Spain into a commanding 3-0 lead by the 24th minute.
Spain’s Dominance Sealed Early
The team’s dominance extended into the second half, as Spain added a fourth goal in the 49th minute. Marc Cucurella unleashed a shot that was initially saved by Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed al-Owais, but the ball deflected off defender Hassan al-Tambakti and crossed the line, extending Spain’s lead further.
This emphatic win propelled Spain to the top of Group H with four points from their two matches, positioning them well for the next stage of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde prepared to face Uruguay later on Sunday in Miami, aiming to match Spain’s points tally. Their coach, Pedro Leitao Brito, popularly known as “Bubista,” emphasized that his team would approach the match “without fear,” underscoring their determination to compete strongly despite being underdogs.
