After two seasons without securing any trophies, Real Madrid is aiming to regain its winning momentum, with the club turning once again to José Mourinho, who has returned for a second tenure as head coach. The club legend Steve McManaman has expressed optimism that Madrid’s recent signings will significantly strengthen the squad this year.

While the team boasts a formidable attacking lineup featuring names like Rodrygo, Yann Diomandé, Kylian Mbappé, Bellingham, and Vinícius Júnior, McManaman emphasized that Mourinho’s initial focus is on fortifying the defense. “The fact that there’s three defenders [signed] screams that they needed some defensive stability, and that’s what Jose wants first and foremost,” he told AS USA.

According to McManaman, Madrid’s offensive potential is unquestionable, but maintaining a solid defensive foundation remains Mourinho’s key priority this season. “If you have Rodrygo, Yann Diomandé, Kylian Mbappé, Bellingham and Vini Junior, you know you’re going to score goals. But it’s keeping them out that is Mourinho’s key priority, and that’s where they’ve strengthened,” he noted.

New defensive options in Madrid

To address defensive vulnerabilities, Real Madrid has reinforced its backline with the acquisitions of Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konaté, and Denzel Dumfries. Each defender arrives with valuable experience and is at a prime stage in their careers, positioning them to compete vigorously for starting positions under Mourinho’s management.

Among these additions, McManaman singled out World Cup winner Marc Cucurella as a particularly significant signing. He suggested that Cucurella’s presence could be pivotal in providing the defensive stability the team has been seeking.
