In a surprising twist last week in Newark, California, two trailers bearing the logos of Nvidia and PlusAI were stolen, only to be recovered nearby with their valuable contents completely untouched. The trailers, reportedly found just half a mile from their warehouse, contained nearly 40,000 pounds of sand combined, confounding the thieves who had likely expected high-tech equipment inside.
High-Tech Disguise for Autonomous Truck Research
The trailers are a part of ongoing collaboration between Nvidia and PlusAI, focusing on artificial intelligence software and autonomous truck technology. Instead of shipping costly hardware or GPUs, the trailers were loaded with simulated weights—approximately 20,000 pounds of sand each—to aid in testing and development for autonomous freight transport.
Lauren Kwan, a spokesperson for PlusAI, explained that the simulated loads are an integral component of their research and development process. This strategy ensures that the trailers can mimic real-world conditions without risking expensive or sensitive equipment during field tests.
This incident highlights not only the high value and demand for Nvidia‘s technology in the AI and data center sectors but also the innovative methods companies employ in advancing autonomous vehicle technology. Despite the apparent attempt by thieves to acquire valuable assets, the unusual cargo ensured the security of the companies’ intellectual property and equipment.
