Typhoon Champi is currently drawing attention due to its potential to unleash heavy rains, flooding, and intense winds as it traverses the western Pacific Ocean. This event spotlights the ongoing concerns surrounding typhoons, some of the most powerful tropical storms globally. Yet, a common question arises: what distinguishes a typhoon from a hurricane?

Both typhoons and hurricanes are types of large, potent tropical cyclones that develop over warm ocean waters, but their classification depends primarily on geographical location and regional terminology.

Typhoons refer specifically to tropical cyclones forming in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean region, which encompasses the western Pacific, South China Sea, and Philippine Sea. The term itself originates from the Cantonese phrase “tai fung,” meaning “big wind,” reflecting the immense strength of these storms in that area.

In contrast, hurricanes are tropical cyclones that form over the North Atlantic Ocean, as well as in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. Interestingly, in the South Pacific Ocean, these storms are labeled “cyclones,” highlighting regional differences in naming conventions despite the storms’ similar meteorological nature.
