Purchasing a digital game from the PlayStation Store does not grant ownership in the traditional sense; instead, buyers receive a personal license tied directly to their PlayStation account. This distinction becomes critical due to a clause in Sony’s current worldwide terms of service that affects users who have not accessed their accounts for an extended period.

Sony reserves the right to initiate the closure of accounts that remain inactive for at least 36 months. However, this process is not automatic and requires the company to notify the account holder in advance. Once the initial warning is sent to the registered email address, users are given an additional six months to either log in or contact Sony to keep their account active.

Consequences of Account Closure

Should the account ultimately be closed, the implications are significant. The terms explicitly state that access to online services connected to the account will be revoked. More importantly, any digital products purchased through that account—including games—will no longer be accessible. Sony emphasizes the finality of this action with a clear statement: “Account termination is irreversible.”

For players who have accumulated extensive digital libraries over the years, this policy highlights the importance of maintaining regular account activity. Without periodic logins or communication with Sony, users risk losing access to their purchased content permanently, underscoring the need for awareness of these service terms when managing digital purchases on PlayStation.
