The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) is set to conclude its two-match friendly series against Brazil tonight in Fortaleza, following a narrow 2-1 defeat in São Paulo on Saturday.
Anticipation is high as over 40,000 spectators are expected to pack the 57,000-seat stadium, promising an electric and challenging atmosphere for the American side. The USWNT continues to adapt to the passionate and intense environment that Brazilian soccer fans bring to their home matches.
Reflecting on the initial encounter, USWNT head coach Emma Hayes remarked on the distinct style and fervor surrounding football in Brazil. She highlighted how the crowd functioned as an influential “12th player,” creating a unique challenge that she expects will only grow stronger in the forthcoming game.
Beyond the atmosphere, Hayes acknowledged a competitive disadvantage rooted in the structural differences between leagues. Of the 26 players on the US roster, 21 currently compete in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), which schedules considerably fewer matches over a World Cup cycle compared to other leagues internationally.
For instance, Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil conducts approximately three times as many midweek fixtures as the NWSL. Additionally, Europe’s leading leagues feature multiple in-season tournaments alongside their regular domestic schedules, providing players with greater exposure to diverse competitive situations.
“We’ve got to be tougher in a lot of things, and we’ve got to be more durable,” Hayes emphasized. “We’ve got to expose ourselves to the elements of the game,” she added, underscoring the need for increased resilience and experience against top-tier opposition.
