Virgil van Dijk, captain of Liverpool, has openly criticized the team’s performances last season, describing them as “unacceptable” and urging his teammates to make amends in the current campaign.
The club endured a disappointing year, finishing fifth in the Premier League and failing to secure any major trophies. This downturn came just one year after Liverpool had clinched the English league title, making the decline particularly stark.
Throughout the season, Liverpool suffered 19 defeats across all competitions, including 12 losses in 38 league matches. This tally of league defeats was nearly equal to the combined total from the previous three seasons, highlighting a significant drop in consistency and form.
In cup competitions, Liverpool’s journey was cut short early. The team exited the Champions League and FA Cup at the quarter-final stage, while their League Cup campaign ended in the fourth round.
Adding to the turmoil, tensions arose between manager Arne Slot and star forward Mohamed Salah, with the Egyptian international alleging that he had been unfairly made a scapegoat for the club’s struggles. This discord contributed to Slot’s eventual dismissal.
Van Dijk Calls for Resilience and Commitment
In the wake of these setbacks, Van Dijk has emphasized the determination within the squad to recover and improve. “Last year was unacceptable. This year we have an opportunity to turn that around,” he stated, acknowledging the challenge ahead while expressing confidence in the team’s readiness.
“We all know how tough that will be but if you’re not up for the challenge, then you’re not at the right place,” he added, underscoring the importance of mental toughness and collective effort.
Van Dijk also stressed that the squad is motivated and focused on the task, saying, “What I feel at the moment is everyone is up for the challenge. Let’s see how we go about it.” He is optimistic about the season ahead and insists that Liverpool have no point to prove to anyone but themselves.
