Microsoft’s Xbox division is undergoing a significant transformation as part of what the company calls its “big reset.” This extensive overhaul includes a sweeping restructuring of its internal studios and the announcement of 268 layoffs, signaling a pivotal shift in Xbox’s operational strategy.
Under the leadership of Asha Sharma and Matt Booty, Xbox acknowledged last June the necessity for a strategic change to ensure the company’s long-term viability. Now, several months later, the scale and impact of this reset are becoming clear. The reorganization places several key studios under new management umbrellas, including Activision, Bethesda, and King, redefining the structure of Xbox Game Studios.
Major Franchise Realignments and Studio Mergers
One of the most notable changes affects the flagship franchise Halo. In a surprising move, Activision will take the lead on developing the next installment of Halo, establishing a dedicated team within its ranks specifically for this purpose. Meanwhile, the original Halo Studios will undergo downsizing, transitioning into a smaller support unit to maintain recent titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved.
In addition to this, Bethesda will assume direct oversight of Obsidian Entertainment, another of Xbox’s prominent studios. Furthermore, Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios are set to merge, consolidating their resources and talents into a single, unified studio. These strategic decisions reflect Microsoft’s intent to streamline development and foster stronger leadership within its gaming division.
The restructuring also includes leadership changes across various teams, further emphasizing Microsoft’s commitment to reinventing Xbox’s approach to game development and studio management. This “big reset” marks a new chapter for Xbox, aiming to solidify its position in the competitive gaming industry through focused management and revamped studio dynamics.
