The next generation of Xbox consoles will not arrive as a single, standalone device. Instead, Project Helix is set to introduce a diverse range of hardware, blending the qualities of both consoles and PCs. According to Asha Sharma, head of the Xbox division, the initiative promises a “great family of devices” designed to elevate gaming performance and flexibility.
While the new lineup is not expected imminently, development kits for Project Helix are scheduled to reach game developers in early 2027. Sharma revealed in a recent BBC interview that Microsoft is committed to innovation in both affordability and efficiency, aiming to enhance how players experience games across platforms.
Performance and Compatibility Focus
Sharma emphasized that Xbox’s vision extends beyond traditional console gaming. The upcoming devices will support playing both console and PC games, reflecting a shift toward greater versatility in the gaming ecosystem. “We’ve talked about being able to play console games, but also PC games on your console,” she noted, underscoring the company’s drive to merge these experiences in one seamless environment.
Regarding physical media, which remains a subject of industry-wide evolution, Xbox recently unveiled a system for digitizing physical games. This development has sparked speculation about whether Project Helix will include disc drives. Sharma did not provide a definitive answer but highlighted the importance of accessibility and continuity of game libraries, stating, “Whether you play physical games, digital games, it’s really important that your libraries can go wherever you are.”
Despite recent industry moves—such as PlayStation’s decision to cease physical game production—Sharma maintained that Xbox’s approach continues to focus on giving players freedom and choice in how they access and enjoy their games, without elaborating on any changes to the company’s plans.
As the Xbox team prepares to unveil more details about Project Helix, the gaming community can anticipate a new generation of devices that aims to blend high performance with broad compatibility and flexible ownership models.
