Uruguay centre-back Ronald Araujo has completed a season-long loan move from Barcelona to Liverpool, the Spanish club confirmed on Monday. Although the specific terms of the agreement were not officially disclosed by Barcelona, Spanish media reports indicate that Liverpool will assume responsibility for Araujo’s wages and hold an option to purchase the player for €55 million (approximately $63.5 million).
In an official statement, Barcelona wrote, “FC Barcelona and Liverpool FC have agreed the loan of Ronald Araujo until June 30, 2027. Good luck, Ronald!” The 27-year-old defender remains contracted with Barcelona until 2031, having signed an extension in 2025.
Araujo’s playing time at Barcelona diminished significantly last season under coach Hansi Flick. The emergence of young Spanish defender Pau Cubarsi as a defensive mainstay pushed Araujo further down the pecking order. Over the previous campaign, he appeared in only 35 matches across all competitions and took a break for several weeks due to mental exhaustion. Although he returned to action in January, he faced stiff competition for a starting role from defenders such as Eric García and Gerard Martí.
Strengthening Liverpool’s Defensive Line
Joining Liverpool, Araujo arrives at a club seeking to reinforce its centre-back options. The Reds have seen the departure of Ibrahima Konaté to Real Madrid, while key defenders Joe Gomez and Giovanni León are currently sidelined with injuries. Araujo is expected to provide much-needed depth and form a partnership with Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool’s backline.
