Just moments before the Italian Grand Prix press conference at Monza, tensions soared as the FIA’s arbitration panel delivered a contentious ruling. The decision reinstated Pierre Gasly’s 10-second penalty from the Monaco Grand Prix, effectively stripping the Red Bull driver of the podium position he had initially secured in June. This verdict sparked immediate controversy, as it overturned a previous appeal victory by Alpine.
The case arose from a series of penalties handed out for speeding in the pit lane during the Monaco race. Notably, although multiple drivers were penalized, Gasly alone faced a penalty that affected the final race classification rather than a time penalty served during the race itself. Alpine’s initial appeal argued that a measurement error had led to an unfair penalty, and the FIA had sided with them. However, rival teams that stood to gain positions from the reversal challenged the decision, citing irregularities that prompted the case to be taken to arbitration.
Clash between Italian F1 figures heats up
In the wake of the ruling, Flavio Briatore did not hold back his criticism. The former F1 team principal openly condemned Alpine’s acceptance of what he called “an unfair decision,” while leveling accusations against one of the arbitration judges. Briatore specifically targeted Filippo Marchino, the panel’s fourth judge, alleging that Marchino had connections to McLaren. According to Briatore, Marchino runs a foundation supported by McLaren and had received “two or three cars” from the team, which he implied compromised the judge’s impartiality.
Briatore further described Marchino’s approach during the arbitration process as overly hostile, likening his behavior to that of a prosecutor rather than a neutral adjudicator. “We wanted to understand why he was so accusatory,” Briatore remarked, “and then we realized he was connected to McLaren.” This accusation underscores the deep divisions and high stakes involved in the FIA’s decision, highlighting the intense scrutiny surrounding the enforcement of pit lane penalties and their impact on race results.
