Shailene Woodley has revealed the story behind her unexpected removal from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, where she had been cast as Mary Jane Watson. During a recent discussion on the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Conversations series, Woodley reflected on her enthusiasm for joining the popular franchise and the subsequent disappointment when her role was cut from the final film.

Woodley described the excitement she felt upon being cast in the role, highlighting her personal connection to the character and the Spider-Man universe. “I was cast as Mary Jane for Spider-Man, which was my dream. Oh my god, Spider-Man’s my favorite superhero; Mary Jane was my favorite character growing up. So, when I got it, I was like, ‘This is so exciting!’” she shared.

Having filmed several scenes alongside Andrew Garfield, who portrayed Peter Parker, Woodley was taken aback when she learned that her character would not appear in the finished movie. “We filmed like three scenes together, me and Andrew Garfield. And then, like a year later, they were like, ‘So, you’re not in the movie anymore.’ And I was like, ‘What? What do you mean?’” she recounted.

Plans for Mary Jane’s Introduction Postponed

The explanation given to Woodley was that the filmmakers had introduced numerous new characters in the film and intended to wait and see what happened with Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy and Garfield’s Peter Parker before officially bringing Mary Jane into the story. “They were like, ‘We’ve introduced a lot of new characters in this last one, and we’re going to wait for whatever happens between [Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy] and Andrew [Garfield]. They were like, ‘Let’s wait for her to die, and then we’ll introduce Mary Jane.’ Which made sense, but then they didn’t make that film. So, there was no reintroduction,” Woodley explained.

She also acknowledged the uncertainty around the decision, admitting that the true reasons behind her role being cut might differ. “That’s what I was told, but again, who knows what the truth is? I could have been terrible, and they were like, ‘We can’t do this.’”

Woodley’s experience sheds light on the complex and often unpredictable nature of film production, where even promising roles can vanish due to shifting creative directions and franchise plans.
